Growth partner to networks
We build the foundation for Tesla's Robotaxi network in a metro before it arrives, so it is ready for its first robot and its first hundred, Cybercab, Robotaxi, Robovan, and Optimus: ground with power, hubs and operations, trained people, the record an insurer can read, and the partners who produce the first rides.
The layer every network buys, and nobody wants to build twice
A Robotaxi network arriving in a new metro is four things: a driving system, a vehicle, demand in an app, and fleet operations. The first three are supplied nationally by a handful of well-funded companies. The fourth is local, slow, and unglamorous: parcels and parking decks near demand, a utility interconnect that takes a year, permits, a floor that runs around the clock, cleaners and technicians who show up at four in the morning, an insurer willing to write the risk, and venues that will let vehicles board riders at their curb.
The networks do not build that in every city. Tesla's own Robotaxi charging hub in San Antonio, a 56-stall facility for its fleet, sits on a site public filings list as owned by a third-party real estate developer, not by Tesla. Uber, the other way of assembling a robotaxi service, shows the same pattern at scale: TechCrunch's tracker of its thirty-plus autonomous-vehicle partnerships finds a different local operator handling fleet services in nearly every market, Avomo in Austin and Madrid, Hertz and Oro Mobility on the Lucid–Nuro service, Tawasul in Abu Dhabi, New Horizon in Dubai, Verne in Zagreb. The layer is bought locally. Nobody holds it in the Carolinas, and Tesla has not named Charlotte, Raleigh, or Wilmington. When it does, it will need what we are building, and it will need it from someone already here.
We intend to be that partner, for Tesla and for no one else.
Tesla only, by choice
Robot Mercantile builds for Tesla's robots: Cybercab and the Robotaxi service, Robovan when it arrives, and Optimus when Tesla makes it available to businesses. We are not vehicle-agnostic and we do not intend to operate another network's vehicles. One maker, one autonomy stack, one app, one standard on our floor, and a network whose expansion is public and fast: that is a simpler company to run well than a hub trying to serve three. We say it plainly because it is also our biggest dependency, and we would rather a partner or an investor read that here than discover it. Robot Mercantile has no relationship with Tesla, Inc. today. We intend to purchase Cybercab and Robovan vehicles when they are made available for fleet use, and to deploy Optimus when Tesla makes it available to businesses; Tesla has published no pricing, terms, or dates for any of the three, and neither do we.
We build your foundation now, so you are ready for robots 1 to 100
When Tesla's network chooses a metro, it finds five things ready from one counterparty that it would otherwise assemble from ten.
Ground and power. Candidate sites in each metro, identified, walked, and written up to one template: depot hubs in the industrial belt, micro-hubs in parking decks and on hotel, hospital, and shopping-center property, event hubs at venues, transfer points. Each with the owner, the deal structure available (a lease, a revenue share, a partner-owned site we operate, a build-to-suit), and the utility's answer on power and interconnect timeline. The network chooses. We already hold the option or the relationship.
Operations. The hub itself, opened and run to a written standard: launch-ready defined system by system, hours out of service as the number the hub lives by, defects per million rides as the quality measure, four procedures and twelve operating principles that follow Six Sigma discipline. Cybercab, Robotaxi, and Robovan vehicles are charged, cleaned, inspected, staged, and signed back into service by people we qualified, and the numbers the network reports come from our floor. When Tesla makes Optimus available to businesses, the floor tasks we have already written as standard work, kitting parts, moving consumables, connecting and clearing charging positions, cleaning routines between rides, are the tasks we intend to qualify Optimus units on first, under the same rule as every other worker on the floor: a qualified person signs a vehicle back into service, every time.
Talent. Eight role families written up publicly before a single posting, a talent network already collecting names across the United States, a written skills ladder, safety training before anyone touches the floor, and college partnerships intended in every metro, from Central Piedmont in Charlotte to Texas State Technical College and Miami Dade as we grow. A network arriving here does not recruit from zero.
Insurance and risk. Underwriters price what they can read. We intend to give them a record: the launch-ready standard, the qualification record for every person on the floor, every incident logged against a procedure, every root-cause review closed with a change to the standard. We intend to bring an insurance advisor onto our board before the first vehicle and to work with carriers on what that record must contain to write hub, fleet-operations, and event-curb risk in North Carolina. We do not underwrite and we make no claims about coverage. We build the evidence that lets someone else underwrite well.
Sales, marketing, and partners. A network's first rides in a metro come from venues, hotels, hospitals, universities, employers, and municipalities that have already agreed where riders will board. We build that demand before the vehicles: pickup points designed and agreed with venues, event plans drilled, hotel and hospitality relationships, curb agreements with the city. Tesla's brand carries the ride. Our job is that the ride exists on day one.
Robots 1, 10, 100
Robot 1. One hub energized, one pickup point agreed, one shift qualified, one insurer's questions answered, one utility meter live. Everything a single Cybercab needs to carry a rider in the metro, in place before the vehicle.
Robots 1 to 10. The hub runs every shift. The second and third pickup points open. The weekly improvement review produces changes and the root-cause review closes them. The first partner revenue share starts. The record grows long enough for an underwriter to price.
Robots 10 to 100. A second hub or a ring of micro-hubs. Robovan on event routes. Optimus units qualified for floor tasks. Site development running ahead of the fleet. A hub manager and shift leads, senior technicians produced by the ladder, the college pipeline delivering. The numbers the network reports to its board coming from our floor.
For the institutions that will finance the robots
The robots a hub runs do not have to sit on our balance sheet or Tesla's. A credit union or bank that already writes vehicle and equipment loans for its members and business customers can finance a Cybercab, a Robovan, or an Optimus unit that lives and works at a Robot Mercantile hub, with us as the operator of record under a service agreement and as the source of the record a lender reads: hours in and out of service, who touched the robot and when, every incident against a procedure, every root-cause review closed, the maintenance history. We intend to give lenders that record, in one format, for every robot we operate. We are not describing an offering to members here, and we will not until counsel has written the structure; today this is a door for the institution. The record, in detail. What a network receives before it commits
The market-entry pack for a metro, which we intend to build for Charlotte first and to have ready before Tesla names it:
- Candidate sites with owner, size, structure available, and a first estimate of the cost to make each launch-ready.
- The utility's answer on power and interconnect timeline at each candidate.
- The permitting path and the municipal conversations already started.
- Venues and partners with a pickup point designed, and the event calendar that drives demand by hour.
- The operating standard, the four procedures, and the eight roles, written.
- The record every robot at the hub will produce, and the format a network, an insurer, and a lender read.
- The staffing pipeline: talent-network names by role family, and the college partnerships in progress.
- What an insurer has asked to see, and what we can already show.
Who we are talking to
The people at Tesla responsible for Robotaxi expansion, fleet operations, and the sale of Cybercab, Robovan, and Optimus to businesses, and the fleet partners and developers Tesla already works with, such as the owner of its San Antonio hub site. What we do not know yet
When Tesla's network reaches the Carolinas, whether Tesla will sell Cybercab or Robovan to independent fleets, on what terms, and when Optimus is offered to businesses; Tesla has published none of it. What a network pays an operator per vehicle per month; no public figure exists and we will not invent one. What the utility will say about each site until we have asked. What an insurer will require until we have shown one the record. We say this plainly because a growth partner that guesses on your behalf is not one you want.
