Optimus — Tesla's humanoid robot, and the hub-floor work we intend it to do

Optimus is the one Tesla robot in our plan that does not carry a rider. It is the reason the hub-floor standard work is written as tasks a robot could one day take on: kitting parts, moving consumables, connecting and clearing charging positions, cleaning routines between rides. Reported facts first, with sources; our intent after.

What has been reported

Reported by the press sources listed at the bottom of this page. We have not verified them independently.

  • Tesla's Q2 2026 shareholder update says it decommissioned the Model S and Model X lines at Fremont and installed first-generation Optimus production lines there, with initial builds used for training data collection and functionality development.
  • Tesla has described a second-generation Optimus facility at Giga Texas with a long-term target of ten million units a year.
  • Tesla has not opened an external sales channel, pre-order, or waitlist for Optimus, and has published no price or date for sales to businesses.

What it means for our network

We intend to deploy Optimus units on our hub floors when Tesla makes them available to businesses, on the floor tasks we have already written as standard work: parts kitting, consumables, connecting and clearing charging positions, and cleaning routines between rides. Because Tesla has published no price, date, or terms, we plan the work and not the schedule.

The rule does not change for a robot. A qualified person signs a vehicle back into service, every time, and an Optimus unit qualifies on a task the way a new hire does: by demonstrating it to someone already qualified, with the result recorded. Our people ladder is written so that the arrival of Optimus moves technicians up it, toward the sensor, compute, and sign-off work only a person does.
